Chitungwiza will now be holding elections for mayor and deputy mayor on Monday, September 18.
Expectations had been that the local authority would have done that at the same time as Harare, Bulawayo and Mutare and when this failed to happen, there was discontent from the council chamber quarters and the residents in general pertaining to what they perceived as delays.
Council spokesperson Lovemore Meya, in a notice Friday, said the elections will take place at the council headquarters at 10:00am.
The council executive leadership believes the process is still within the laid-down timeframes as, according to the Local Government Ministry, there was need for the recently sworn-in councilors to first be inducted before elections for mayors and deputies were conducted.
The Secretary in the Ministry, Zvinechimwe Churu, in a memo dated September 4, had advised of this position, further stating the parent Ministry would have completed the first phase of training within 14 days from the date of publishing of the notice.
