Masvingo elects female mayor

Shantel Chiwara was yesterday evening elected Masvingo’s new mayoress.

The 25-year-old Citizens Coalition for Change politician becomes the second woman to be elected in that position after Mutare’s Sophia Gwasira’s election into a similar position last week.

She is also the youngest woman ever to be elected into the position.

Chiwara, as mayoress of Zimbabwe’s oldest city, becomes the third ever local authority councilor to be appointed into such a position after Angeline Kasipo, who was elected ward 10 councillor and Kwekwe mayoress on an MDC Alliance ticket in 2018.
