Harare Province was crowned the champion of the inaugural Interprovincial Handball Tournament, dominating both the male and female categories. The tournament was held at the University of Zimbabwe grounds over the weekend, with seven male and seven female teams competing for honours.
Harare was in a class of its own, outclassing the other provinces in both group stages and knockout rounds. On the women’s end, Harare comprehensively beat Mashonaland West 24-10 in the final, while the men clinched a nail-biting 22-21 victory over Manicaland Province.
The Zimbabwe Handball Federation was impressed with the talent on display at the tournament, which served as a platform for national team selection.
“We decided to come up with an inter-provincial tournament where each province is bringing its best provincial players to come and compete at a national championship,” said ZHF president Edson Chirowodza.
“During the tournament, our national team coaches are selecting various players to beef up our male and female national teams.”
The Interprovincial Handball Tournament was a success in terms of both competition and talent identification. It is hoped that the tournament will continue to be held annually, and that it will help to raise the level of has reached in Zimbabwe.
