Before the chaos and fights in the Citizens Coalition for Change have settled, 12 Bulawayo City Council representatives have been recalled.
Local Government and Public Works Minister, Winston Chitando yesterday wrote to the local authority’s Town Clerk, notifying him of the position.
“I wish to inform you that I am in receipt of a letter from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) stating that the following have ceased to be members of the Citizens Coalition for Change political party:…” wrote Chitando.
Ward 1 councillor Shepherd Sithole, Nkosinathi Hove-Mpofu (ward 6), Donaldson Mabutho (ward 9), Takunda Felix Madzana (ward 18), Simbarashe Dube (ward 20), Tinevimbo Maphosa (ward 21), Thobela Mmeli (ward 22) and Arnold Batirai (ward 24) have been recalled.
Also recalled are proportional representation councilors Sarah Cronje, Tabeth Mhizha, Dorcas Sibanda and Sibusiso Tshongwe.
“In terms of Section 278 (1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, as read with Section (1)(k), the above-mentioned wards are now vacant,” added Chitando in the letter in which he also asked the Town Clerk, in terms of Section 121 of the Electoral Act, to proceed to inform the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission of the vacancies.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports said members of provincial councils Granger Nyoni and Gugu Ncube of Matabeleland South, Maundura Mbiri of Matabeleland North, Masvingo ward 2 councillor, who had been elected the country’s youngest female mayor, Shantel Chiwara as well as Epworth proportional representation councilor Anna Sande had also been recalled.
Their names appear in the October 3 letter written to Chitando by Sengezo Tshabangu, who claims to be interim CCC secretary general.
Tshabangu has already recalled 15 CCC legislators from the National Assembly after writing to Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Mudenda, who in turn has notified the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission of vacancies in constituencies that were represented by the fired lawmakers.
