On a Sunday night, the heart of Harare’s Uptown neighbourhood was pounded by the rhythmic beats of Chillspot records, a music movement born in the ghetto of Mbare. Club Zeus, formerly known as Club Connect, was the venue for this epic encounter, and the atmosphere was electric.
Chillspot is a raw and authentic expression of the ghetto experience, and its music resonates with people from all walks of life. At Club Zeus, the crowd was a melting pot of cultures, but they were all united by their love for good music.
The night began with a performance by Ras Caleb, a renowned reggae artist. He set the tone for the evening with some reggae and Zimdancehall music. Next up were DJs Fantan and Levels, who took the crowd on a journey through the best of Zimdancehall.
The energy in the club was palpable. People were dancing, singing, and cheering along to the music. The air was thick with sweat and the smell of excitement. It was a truly unforgettable night.
For many people uptown, Chillspot Sundays at Club Zeus is a welcome change of pace. It is a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and let loose to the rhythms of the ghetto. It is also a chance to celebrate the diversity of Zimbabwean culture and the power of music to bring people together.
In the words of one female fan only identified as Essy: “Chillspot Sundays at Club Zeus is indeed a great experience which is so conducive, especially to us ladies.”
“So, if you are ever in Harare on a Sunday night, be sure to check out Chillspot Sundays at Club Zeus. It is an experience that you will not forget,” she said.
“I love Chillspot but sometimes it is more difficult for me to follow them where they will be performing because of where I stay,” said Tinoda Mawunganidze of Borrowdale.
Mawunganidze, who enjoys Zimdancehall, believes that movements like Chillspot should be given a platform to perform at uptown pubs.
“Most of us who stay in the leafy suburbs come from the ghetto and we miss that kind of performance and I really enjoyed my Sunday night here at Club Zeus,” he added.
