Alleged robber tries to trick law enforcement after being shot in failed heist

A man, who allegedly participated in an armed robbery and was shot and went the police and lied to get medical attention, has appeared in court.

Godfrey Magadu, 31, of Chemhondoro in Murehwa, appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with attempted murder.

The State alleges that Magadu, who was with his accomplice, now deceased went to rob Chemical Merchants Company located at number 551 off Derbyshire Road, Waterfalls, Harare.

The State alleged that, they armed themselves with three shotguns and went to Gurus Security Company guards, Given Nyakarare and Samson Mupandawana, who were on duty with a revolver.

Magadu and his accomplices allegedly manhandled Mupandawana and forced him into one of the offices.

They assaulted him, demanding to know where money and valuables were kept while breaking office doors.

Nyakarare ran away and hid behind the offices.

Magadu and his team realised that one of the guards was outside and went to him.

The security guard who was outside fired two shot towards the accused persons who were approaching him. In the process, one of the accused was shot on the forehead and collapsed.

The other accused person was shot on the left side of the rib cage but managed to escape.

They dropped their Huglu shotgun in the process and dragged their accomplice who had been shot and dumped him one kilometre away from the scene and fled.

On October 18, 2023, Magadu, allegedly went to ZRP Southlea Park, Harare, and made a false report to one Sergeant Luke Deza that he had been robbed and shot by four unknown accused at Masteps, Hopley, Harare.

He gave a false name and introduced himself as Franklyin Mubaiwa. He said he had looked for medical attention and was first referred to the police before being attended.

He was given a request of medical treatment form and made arrangements that he was taken to Sally Mugabe hospital for treatment.

He was later referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital.
