England-based Warriors midfielder, Marvelous Nakamba is set to be named as the new captain of the Zimbabwe senior men’s football team in preparation for the team’s upcoming 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria later this month.

The 29-year-old, who currently plays for English Premier League side Luton Town, is expected to take over the captaincy from Knowledge Musona, who retired from international football last year.

Many were anticipating that France-based Marshall Munetsi would be named the captain but it seems new Warriors coach, Baltemar Brito, has chosen Nakamba for the leadership role.

Although Brito has not officially confirmed the development, sources said Nakamba will be appointed captain.

Brito selected the Hwange-born footballer as the Zimbabwean captain’s representative for voting in the FIFA Ballon d’Or two months ago. The FIFA Ballon d’Or award is determined by votes from national team coaches, their captains, and a selected group of journalists.

Nakamba is among the senior players, who also include Marshall Munetsi, goalkeeper Washington Arubi, Tendayi Darikwa, Teenage Hadebe, Jordan Zemura, and Tino Kadewere, who were retained in the Warriors squad for the upcoming matches against Rwanda and Nigeria.
