Activists freed after Month behind bars

Three human rights activists, Namatai Kwekweza, Robson Chere, and Samuel Gwenzi, have been granted bail after spending over a month in remand prison.

The trio, represented by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, were arrested in the lead-up to the 44th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads State and Government. They were accused of participating in a protest at the Harare magistrates' court in solidarity with 78 other members of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change who were arrested for unlawful gathering.

The High Court overturned the lower court's decision to deny bail, stating that the evidence presented was not compelling enough to justify their continued detention.

The activists were granted bail of US$150 each and were ordered to report to the nearest police station every last Friday of the month.
