Gwayi-Shangani dam completion has fallen behind schedule with completion now set for the first quarter of 2024 instead of December 2023.
“We are now targeting to complete the project by the first quarter of next year,” said Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Richard Moyo.
He said that resource shortages have caused the delay.
This has not gone down well with intended beneficiaries as Bulawayo city continues to face water shortages.
“The government keeps on changing goalposts, we need seriousness,” said Winos Dude, Bulawayo United Resident Association chairperson.
Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association secretary for administration, Thembelani Dude said government needs to commit through availing resources to expedite the completion of the decades-long outstanding project.
When complete, the dam will be the biggest in Zimbabwe after With a holding capacity of 635 million cubic metres of water, Gwayi-Shangani Dam is set to be the third largest inland dam in the country after Tugwi-Mukosi and Mutirikwi.
The dam was expected to catch its first inflows during the current rain season in order to serve beneficiaries until the next season.
