A heavy storm has battered parts of Gauteng, leaving a trail of destruction and roads flooded this afternoon, Friday, 5 January.
Social media warning over the destructive storm
Anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee cautioned about the storm as motorists return to their households from work.
“A number of roads in Gauteng have been reported as flooded or with lots of standing water, making it difficult for traffic to pass through. We ask the community to please avoid unnecessary risks by using alternate routes instead of attempting to cross flooded roads and bridges you may come across. The unknown conditions can pose a serious risk to life,” he warned.
Different parts of Gauteng affected
Part of the affected areas include Joe Slovo Drive in Johannesburg (flooded), Germiston (hail) and Alberton, east of Johannesburg, where the road surface washed away.
Meanwhile, the Road Traffic Management Corporation recently advised motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving in rainy conditions.
The RTMC urged motorists to reduce speed, keep a safe following distance, have lights on and avoid crossing flooded bridges.
“Motorists must also ensure that vehicles are in a roadworthy state. Lights, wipers, windscreens, brakes and tyres must be checked before the start of the journey,” the entity warned. –The South African
