The wife of a 36-year-old Bindura teacher fainted after her husband had been sentenced to an effective 15 years in jail for raping a Grade Seven pupil three times in the bush.
The wife was shocked with the sentence and she fainted, bringing court business to a halt.
The teacher, Matthew Maripfonde, was initially sentenced to 16 years in jail but Bindura regional magistrate Shingirai Mutiro, suspended one year on condition of good behaviour.
The court heard that Maripfonde started his shenanigans in June last year and he raped the 12-year-old three times, threatening her not to disclose the abuse to anyone.
He would take her to a bushy area near Bindura civil court and rape her in his car.
The matter came to light on June 30 when the teacher only released the girl after 0300hrs and the girl told her parents about the abuse, leading to Maripfonde’s arrest.
