Bangladesh has thrown its weight behind South Africa in its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, lending its full support to the southern African nation in condemning he Middle East country’s violation of the Genocide Convention following atrocities in Gaza where women and children fell victim of the conflict.
This comes as more than 900 other global movements, political parties and states have put lent their full support to South Africa, Africa who have already presented their oral argument at the ICJ, with the request for indication of provisional measures, which include requests for the suspension of all military operations in and against Gaza and allowing safe, adequate and unimpeded humanitarian aid into all areas tabled in the application and argument filed.
In a statement, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that it supports the requests in the provisional measures as they are of concrete interest to end the disaster that has unfolded in Gaza, adding that it is preparing to file a declaration of intervention in the proceedings same with sentiments made by the government of Maldives on the same case.
“Bangladesh also supports South Africa’s request for the indication provisional measures. The ongoing attacks by Israeli Defence Forces have claimed the lives of thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians, the majority of whom are women and children. Bangladesh considers these deliberate acts of aggression a blatant disregard for and violation of international law, including the Genocide Convention,” read the statement
In previous years, Bangladesh has called for a permanent and lasting solution in the conflict that will see a restoration of pre-1967 borders and establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
