Man in court for illegally inheriting a car

A man who inherited a car without the knowledge of the now-deceased has been granted bail.

Shame Llospy Kodzi, 27, of Karoi, appeared before magistrate Stanford Mambanje at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with theft of trust.

He was ordered to deposit US$100 and will appear in court on February 29.

The State, through prosecutor Anesu Chirenje, alleges that in September 2023, Kodzi took advantage of the death of one Lawrence Binari, the registered owner of a white Toyota Hilux D4D and took the car from Spray Liner Garage, located along Belvedere Road, Harare.

It is alleged that Kodzi never notified the now-deceased’s relatives, neither did he take the car to Binari’s relatives but instead, Kodzi started using the car.

The offence was discovered by the now deceased’s brother Lawrence Mbewe, who made a report to the police, leading to Kodzi’s arrest and subsequent recovery of the car in Makuti by detectives from CID Vehicle Theft Squad Harare.

The car is worth US$12 000.
