An outstanding Quest Financial Services robbery suspect, Blessing Sumbani Sithole, was shot by police detectives after an attempt to shoot at the police while recovering a pistol used in the robbery.
Sithole, 49, who was still at large, was allegedly part of the armed robbers involved in the Quest Financial Services robbery in Belgravia back in February, where US$720 676, ZAR 10 500 and €120 and three laptops were stolen.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said that the suspect was arrested in Chiredzi where he subsequently revealed where he had placed a gun stolen at the micro finance bank, in Southlea Park.
Upon arrival at a shrub, the suspect pointed the gun at the detectives leading to one detective opening fire and shooting Sithole.
“The suspect led detectives to Manyame River in Southlea Park, Harare where he claimed to have hidden a 7.65mm CZ Voortrekker pistol which was stolen at Quest Financial Services in Belgravia during the heist. Upon arrival at the scene, the suspect picked the pistol from the shrub and cocked it before aiming at detectives who were escorting him.
“Subsequently, the suspect was shot on the back and was rushed to Sally Mugabe Hospital where he died upon admission,” Ass. Comm. Nyathi said.
