Three soldiers from Tanzania and one from South Africa have been confirmed dead while three others were injured during the Southern African Development Community mission in Eastern DRC following a hostile mortar round fall near their residence camp.
The soldiers, who formed part of the SADC mission in DRC’s response to address the unstable security situation, saw three Tanzanian soldiers dead, three others injured while the South African soldier died receiving treatment from a health challenge issue in Goma.
In a statement, the Sadc Secretariat informed the region of the unfortunate incident, citing that it remains focused on delivering peace in the region according to its mandate agreed upon by all affiliate members.
“The Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo sincerely regrets to inform the public of the passing on of three of its soldiers and three that got injured from the United Republic of Tanzania. The unfortunate incident happened after a hostile mortar round had fallen near the camp they were staying.
“The Sadc family expresses its heartfelt condolences to the beloved families and the Governments of the Republic of South Africa and United Republic of Tanzania on the irreplaceable loss of the deceased soldiers and at the same time, wishes the three injured soldiers speedy recovery,” the Sadc Secretariat said.
