Sex Workers Return to Harare’s ‘KuTouchline’ in Full Force

Commercial sex workers have returned to Harare’s popular “KuTouchline” area in full force after months of reduced activity following alleged brutal assaults by unidentified individuals travelling in a black Raptor vehicle earlier this year.

The area, known for the open solicitation of commercial sex workers, had reportedly experienced a significant decline in activity after the alleged attacks, which left some of the women fearing for their safety.

However, the lull appears to be over, with the women gradually reclaiming the streets, although their operating hours and locations have changed.

Before the alleged beatings, the sex workers were a familiar sight in the area both during the day and at night. Following the incidents, however, they reportedly began returning to the streets only around 7pm.

“We have to hustle, that is why we came back to the streets,” one sex worker told ZimNow, explaining the economic pressures behind their return.

Another described the situation as a possible cat-and-mouse game, suggesting that the women could face further disruptions but would continue trying to earn a living.

“Those who were beaten, tough luck to them, but life continues. If you seriously need money, you can be back in no time,” another sex worker said.

Previously, the women commonly operated around the intersection of Third Street and Fife Avenue. They have now shifted their starting point to Baines Avenue, indicating a change in their usual gathering spots.

The identities and motives of the individuals allegedly involved in the attacks remain unclear.
