Senior police officer killed in road accident

A senior officer in the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Assistant Commissioner Jeremiah Murenje, was killed in a road traffic accident on Saturday.

The accident occurred along the Harare-Denda Road in Bindura.

Murenje, 60, served as Director of the Criminal Investigations Department, Law and Order Division at CID Headquarters.

In a statement, national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi expressed grief over Murenje’s passing.

“Commissioner-General of Police, Tandabantu Godwin Matanga, extended his heartfelt condolences to Murenje’s family and commemorated his service to the nation both as a police officer and a war veteran.”

The late Murenje, whose Chimurenga nom de guerre was David Rujeko MuZimbabwe, a veteran of the county’s liberation struggle, has been declared a Provincial Hero and was expected to be buried today at Manyeve Farm Plot, Concession, Mashonaland Central Province.

“He joined the liberation struggle in 1976 through Rupinda Area, Manicaland into Mozambique by crossing and he received military training at Chimoio’s Takawira base which was attacked in 1977, leaving him with sustained injuries.

“In 1977, he sustained serious injuries when their base was attacked and was taken to Mupali in Tete Province with other wounded comrades and later Matenje Camp,” reads the statement.
