The Zimbabwe Republic Police has apprehended five suspects linked to a copper cable theft at Ngwarati Mine in Turf, Kadoma.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the arrests followed a swift operation on April 14, 2024, around 10:30am.

Acting on a tip-off, police officers intercepted four individuals: Donald Magaya, 23), Onismo Magaya, 26), Takudzwa Mango, 25, and Rabson Mandini, 23.

They were travelling in two white Toyota GD6 motor vehicles with registration numbers AFU 4025 and AGH 4138 near Ngezi Services Garage in Turf. Upon spotting the police, another suspect, Kupakwashe Mutizira, fled the scene.

A thorough search by the ZRP yielded a significant amount of stolen copper cables, according to Nyathi. The recovered haul weighed a staggering 2 572 kilogrammes, with an estimated value of US$48 360. The remaining four suspects were promptly apprehended.

Further investigation, aided by the initial arrests, led the ZRP to Innocent Chafera, 38. He was identified as an accomplice and apprehended while attempting to hide in a disused mine shaft.

The ZRP is currently appealing to the public for any information that could assist in apprehending the remaining fugitive, Mutizira. He is considered a prime suspect in the copper cable theft case.

In a separate case, the ZRP is also requesting the public’s assistance in locating a foreign national, Francis Chikopa, 45. He is wanted for questioning in connection with a copper theft that transpired between March 30 and 31, 2024.

Chikopa was reportedly driving a white Howo Sinotruk truck laden with 36 tonnes of copper en route from Zambia to Mozambique. The authorities believe he diverted the truck’s course, offloaded the copper at an undisclosed location, and subsequently abandoned the vehicle at Macheke Business Centre in Macheke.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Kupakwashe Mutizira or Francis Chikopa is urged to “contact the National Complaints Desk at (0242) 703631 or send a WhatsApp message to 0712 800 197. Information can also be reported at any nearby police station”.
