A man from Dzivaresekwa, Harare, who was allegedly working as a doctor without the required requirements, has been taken to court.

Munyaradzi Chipoterwa, 28, of Dzivaresekwa, appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts accused of contravening the Health Professions Act.

He will appear in court on June 27 and was ordered to deposit US$100 as bail.

The State alleges that on May 23, at around 1520 hours, the Health Professions Authority was informed by Author Matthew that he suspected he was attended by an unqualified doctor.

HPA assigned an informant to do investigations of GENLIFE T/A, Doctor G Salimo surgery located at number 89 Fife Avenue in Harare.

The court heard that when the informant arrived at the surgery, the informant asked to see the doctor on duty and was directed to Chipoterwa.

He identified himself to Chipoterwa and asked to see the registration status of the surgery and the practicing certificate of the doctor on duty.

Chipoterwa allegedly told the informant that he was working as a locum doctor since the doctor-in-charge registered for the institution was not available.

The court heard that the informant observed that the accused was an intern student and was not entitled to practice in the private health institution but was to work under supervision of a qualified doctor in a public health institution.

The informant also noted that there was no current Health Professions Authority licence for Salimo’s surgery.

As a result, Chipoterwa was arrested.
