5 men up for attempting to steal TelOne armoured cables

Five people who allegedly wanted to steal a TelOne armoured cable have been taken been taken to court.

Emmanuel Murau, 28, Collen Jaji, 24, Farai Chimombe, 23, Tapiwa Samson, 24, and Alister Gwata, 24, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with wilful damage or theft of telecommunication lines.

They were remanded in custody.

The State alleges that on May 27, at around 2200 hours, the accused who wanted to steal TelOne cabl along Simon Mazorodze Road, corner Masotsha Ndlovu Road, Waterfalls, Harare went to Mukuvisi Bridge armed with two chisels, a mattock, black machete, a pair of catapults, two picks and an axe.

It is alleged that they dug a trench and exposed the 800 pair TelOne armoured cable, which was underground.

The court heard that they cut one side of the cable and were seen by Scorpion Security guards, Owne Nhau and others, digging out the cable.

The security guards approached the accused and they fled from the scene.

The guards, who pursued and apprehended them, recovered a hacksaw, machete, a pair of catapults, two picks and an axe.

The accused and the tools were taken to ZRP Waterfalls for further management.

On May 28, the accused led the police to the scene and voluntarily made indications.

On the same day, a TelOne official was called and confirmed that the cables belonged to TelOne.
