UBH Kitchen Fire: Seven Escape With Minor Injuries, Patients Not Affected

A fire erupted in the main kitchen of the United Bulawayo Hospitals on Friday during routine maintenance, injuring seven people. Thankfully, all injuries were minor.

The incident occurred around 11 am as a Public Works team replaced oil in an electric oil jacket pot, according to Dr. William Busumani, the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer.

“There was a fire explosion in the main kitchen area,” Dr. Busumani explained. “It happened while the Public Works team was changing oil in one of our electric oil jacket pots.”

Five members of the Public Works team and two student nurses sustained minor injuries. The nurses reportedly panicked and jumped from the first floor.

“Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt,” said Dr. Busumani. “Seven people had minor injuries, but everyone is in stable condition.”

While the fire caused a delay in lunch service, the hospital has taken steps to ensure patients are fed.

“We are using gas and steam as alternative energy sources to continue food preparation,” Dr. Busumani added. “Patients will not go hungry
