Leader of the Labour, Economists, and Afrikan Democrats opposition party, Linda Masarira, has condemned her former friend Gugu Ncube, the daughter of prominent opposition leader, Welshman Ncube, for leaking private conversations and images related to gender-based violence.
The leaked images and chats have been circulating on social media for the past week.
In an interview, Masarira expressed her hurt and betrayal.
“Honestly, I feel like she has been that fake sister. She pretended to be someone who liked me, someone who loved me, and someone who was sisterly. If indeed she was a sister, she would have raised her concerns with me and not on X with the public,” she said.
Masarira revealed that she had confided in Ncube about her experiences with GBV, including a swollen and bloodshot eye, which Ncube subsequently shared without her consent.
Masarira felt violated, saying: “When I spoke to her in private, I was speaking to a sister. If I wanted to go public, I would have done so on my own handle (X).”
Ncube defended her actions, claiming that she and Masarira were never friends but comrades in Zanu PF.
“I have never been a friend of Linda. I don’t know how she defines friendship. Comrades, maybe, will be the right term to describe our relationship. Comrades in Zanu PF in gender matters,” Ncube said.
Ncube argued that Masarira’s pictures were not private since she had shared them with multiple people.
“I saw them in a WhatsApp group the very day she sent them to me too. I am not worried about her pictures. In any case, GBV is not a confidential matter,” Ncube stated.
Masarira is considering legal action against Ncube for breaching her privacy.
“If I let her get away with that, she will do it again to another person. She is not perfect, neither is she a president or law and order centre who tells people what to do and not to do,” Masarira said.
Ncube hopes that Masarira will leave her abusive husband. “Linda deserves better as a woman, not a man who almost left her without an eye barely a month ago.”
