Women In Farming and Entrepreneurship is this Saturday set to host its inaugural ‘Food for Life Festival’ at the Harare Botanic Garden, as it seeks to promote sustainable food systems and sufficiency amid adverse climate conditions.
The festival that is set to accommodate a number of stakeholders including farmers, food processors, youth, policy makers, financiers and Zimbabweans from all walks of life, will build on the core foundations of the importance sustainability in the local food systems and food security with various activities lined up to showcase solutions and ways to utilise modern agricultural systems as well as embracing clean production, processing and reduction in food loss and wastage.
Speaking to Zim Now on the side lines of the preparatory meeting for the weekend festival, WIFE founder Nyaradzo Amanda explained the importance of the event given the difficult climate conditions, noting that exhibition stands are available to relevant companies that promote and empower farmers towards sustainable farming methods, adding that activities will include soil testing, farmer’s market, greenhouse farming demos and Zimbo food cook-off challenge from a number of participating restaurants and food outlets.
“We are all set for the weekend festival, we are holding it under the theme, ‘Food for thought, food for life, nourishing the future’ which we will give farmers, producers and suppliers a chance to connect and get to exhibit their products and produces while interacting with the youth and other relevant stakeholders.
“We hope this will help build on understanding sustainable systems that farmers can explore and implement. Among activities we have lined up, there are exhibitions, soil testing, musical performances from Vera the artist and kid’s traditional entertainment among others.
“One major highlight to ignite inter-generational discussion will be a Food for Life Indaba with industry experts including the My Food is African Alliance Campaigns Coordinator for Zimbabwe Mrs Betha Nherera,” she said.
The gates at the festival will open to the public at 07:00hrs to 17:00hrs, with entry fees set at US$5 or ZiG equivalent for adults, and US$3 for kids.
