A 23-year-old woman has been taken to court for choking her new born baby to death.
Nancy Chitsiga, of Chikurubi Maximum Prison, appeared before magistrate Apollonia Marutya at the Harare Magistrate's Courts charged with infanticide.
On July 26, 2024, Chitsiga, who was nine months pregnant woke up after feeling labour pain.
She reportedly went into the toilet and self-delivered a baby boy.
It is alleged that after giving birth, she then chocked the baby to death and wrapped him into a plastic bag.
The court heard that she then took the plastic bag, put it in a cardboard box and placed it at beside a bin.
It is alleged that Chitsiga continued doing her household chores as usual acting as if nothing had happened placing more litter into that cardboard box.
The court was informed that after some time, she finished her chores and decided to throw away the litter in a dumping pit across the road.
A friend accompanied her to the dumping pit not knowing that it was not only litter that was in the box, as there was a dead baby boy.
Later in the afternoon, a 12-year-old boy of Chikurubi Maximum Prison Camp and his friend went to the dumping pit intending to throw away litter.
The two discovered the baby in the pit after an unknown person had lit fire intending to burn litter leading to the exposure of the baby.
ZPCS police was advised, attended the scene and later made a report at ZRP Highlands.
Chitsiga was remanded in custody.
