Former Gor Mahia forward Benson Omalla has expressed his readiness to lead Kenya's attack in the absence of captain Michael Olunga for the opening two matches of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Olunga, who picked up an injury in the early stages of the Qatar Stars League, is unlikely to feature in the crucial clash against Zimbabwe on Friday in Kampala. In his absence, Omalla, the reigning FKF Premier League golden boot winner, is confident in his ability to fill the void.

"As a player, you always have to be ready," Omalla stated. "I have been in the system for a while and I have learned a lot. If given a chance, I believe in myself and I can show something."

Omalla, who recently moved to Lebanon from Gor Mahia, has made the final squad for the two-match series against Zimbabwe and Namibia. Olunga will undergo an MRI scan in Kampala to determine his availability for the second game in Johannesburg next Tuesday.

Despite his limited appearances for the senior national team, Omalla is determined to make a significant impact and contribute to Kenya's success in the qualifiers. He harbors dreams of representing his country at the Africa Cup of Nations.

"Every player wants to play at the highest level," Omalla emphasized. "I am taking these qualifiers very seriously. I want to compete at the top level and heading into the AFCON qualifiers, I am confident that we can come through."
