Two vendors have been arrested and charged with public violence following an attack on Harare Municipal Police officers. Derrek Nyeke, 33, and Kelvin Chikono, 40, appeared before a Harare magistrate and were remanded in custody.
The incident occurred on May 31, when a group of illegal vendors, including Nyeke and Chikono, were selling their wares on the pavements along Cameroon Street. When Harare Municipal Police and Zimbabwe Republic Police officers arrived to arrest the vendors and confiscate their goods, the vendors dispersed.
However, the vendors later regrouped and became violent, attacking the police officers with wooden sticks and sijamboks. Three police officers were seriously injured and admitted to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. A police vehicle was also damaged during the attack.
The police managed to arrest Nyeke and Chikono, but the other perpetrators remain at large. The total value of the damage caused is still being determined.
The two accused are facing charges of public violence and could face a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.
