Chief Makumbe dies

Acting Chief Makumbe of Buhera, born Paul Chengeta, has passed away at the age of 30.

Chengeta tragically lost his life yesterday in a road accident when his Toyota Revo collided with a Gold Class Express bus in Marondera.

Buhera District Development Coordinator Freeman Mavhiza confirmed the news.

A final-year Civil Engineering student at the University of Zimbabwe, Chengeta was traveling from Harare to Mutare with a friend when the crash occurred.

His uncle, Tapiwa Chengeta, stated that the family will announce funeral arrangements in due course.

In the past year, Zimbabwe has mourned the loss of several esteemed traditional leaders, each leaving an indelible mark on their communities and the nation.

At the age of 28, Chief Marupi (Oaheng Nare) passed away on October 20, 2024, in Harare after a brief illness. His sudden death shocked the community, as he had been a dedicated leader since officially assuming chieftainship in 2014 at 18, following his father's passing in 2008. His funeral in Selonga, Gwanda South, was attended by numerous dignitaries, reflecting his commitment to cultural traditions and community welfare.

Chief Shana III (Zondani Jonah Neluswi) died on May 13, 2024, at 83, after a month-long hospitalization in Bulawayo. Installed as chief in 1984, he served as the chair of the Matabeleland North Provincial Chiefs’ Council and was a member of both Parliament and the Senate. His leadership was celebrated for its dedication to traditional values and community development.

Chief Mukota (Newton Kachepa) tragically succumbed to injuries from a road accident along the Marondera-Musami road in November 2023. Installed shortly before his untimely death, his passing was a significant loss to the Mashonaland East Chiefs Assembly, which had anticipated his contributions to regional development.

Chief Kandana (Michael Magutshwa) died on August 31, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of humility and dedication. Installed in 2007, he was instrumental in guiding young leaders and was deeply respected across Bulilima district and beyond. His funeral drew numerous dignitaries, underscoring his impact on traditional leadership in Zimbabwe.
