The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ)  recalled a batch of Captopril 25mg tablets after the medicine failed to meet quality standards.

The recalled tablets, batch number B520K001, were manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd, based in India. The tablets are commonly used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure.

MCAZ Director General Richard Rukwata said the medicine must be removed from circulation immediately.

“All pharmaceutical wholesalers, distributors, government and private health institutions, clinics, pharmacies, and hospitals are instructed to immediately quarantine this batch and cease all distribution, dispensing, or use,” he said.

Patients who are in possession of the affected batch have been advised to return the medicine.

“Patients who may be in possession of the affected batch are strongly encouraged to return the medicines to the pharmacies where they were dispensed or directly to the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe,” said Rukwata.

Although no side effects have been officially reported, MCAZ said the recall was necessary to protect public health.

“This precautionary measure is in line with our mandate to protect public and animal health by ensuring that medicines and medical devices meet required standards of quality, safety, and efficacy,” said Rukwata.

He added that the recall was a sign of the country’s growing capacity to detect and deal with poor-quality medicines.

“Our ability to detect and act on such issues reflects the growing strength and vigilance of our regulatory systems,” he said.

“We are committed to maintaining the highest standards in ensuring that all medicines in circulation are safe for use.”

The regulator said it would continue monitoring pharmaceutical products and urged healthcare providers to report any suspected problems.

“We remind all healthcare professionals and patients to remain vigilant and report any suspected quality defects or adverse drug reactions to the MCAZ,” said Rukwata.
