Traffic Offender Accused of Assaulting Police

Zim Now Writer

A 22-year-old Sunningdale man has appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts facing charges of reckless driving and assaulting law enforcement officers.

Last Sande was remanded in custody following allegations that he attacked a Zimbabwe Republic Police officer and a Harare Municipal Police Parking Supervisor while resisting arrest.

The State alleges that on April 19, 2025, at around 7PM, ZRP officer Tamberekera Godknows and Parking Supervisor Tambara were on duty conducting traffic decongestion duties at the intersection of Samora Machel Avenue and Leopold Takawira Street.

Sande, who was driving a Honda Fit (registration number AFI 3446), allegedly violated traffic rules by driving the wrong way and parking against the one-way flow towards Kwame Nkrumah Avenue.

Upon being approached by the officers and informed that he was under arrest, Sande was instructed to proceed to ZRP Milton Park. While en route, he reportedly pulled over, claiming he needed to make a phone call. Another individual allegedly swapped places with him and took over the wheel.

When they reached ZRP Milton Park, the new driver was ordered to drive into the police station premises but sped off instead. The vehicle was eventually stopped along Harare Drive after the gear lever was reportedly disengaged.

The court heard that the driver jumped out of the vehicle and physically resisted arrest, allegedly wrestling with a ZRP officer and snatching his baton stick. He reportedly used it to assault the officers.

Sande also allegedly kicked Parking Supervisor Tambara on her left thigh during the scuffle.

The matter is still under investigation.
