Journalist Blessed Mhlanga has been granted bail of US$500 by the High Court after spending over two months in detention.

Justice Gibson Mandaza approved the bail on May 6.

Mhlanga, a senior journalist at Alpha Media Holdings, was arrested on February 24, 2025, on charges of transmitting information that incites violence.  The charges stemmed from his coverage of a press conference held by war veteran Blessed Geza, who called for President Emmerson Mnangagwa's resignation.

Authorities accused Mhlanga of disseminating content that could incite public unrest  .

Prior to this ruling, Mhlanga's bail applications were denied multiple times by both the magistrates' court and the High Court.  The courts had previously cited concerns that he might interfere with witnesses or pose a risk to public order  .

His prolonged detention had drawn criticism from press freedom advocates, who viewed the charges as an infringement on media freedom in Zimbabwe.  Organizations like Human Rights Watch and the Committee to Protect Journalists had called for his immediate release, arguing that the charges were baseless and politically motivated  .
