Police name 21 Dead in 3 horror crashes over the weekend

 Mutare–Masvingo road double tragedy responsible for 14 deaths

 

21 people died in three separate crashes in just three days, including 14 victims in back-to-back accidents along the Mutare–Masvingo Road.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police released the names of the deceased, revealing the heavy toll on women, children and working families.

 

Mutare–Masvingo Road, Mutare – 6 Dead (28 August 2025)

Patterns in the Names

The victim lists reveal stark realities:

  • Women were the majority, with 10 adult victims being female
  • Children made up a fifth of the deaths, including a six-month-old, a two-year-old, a four-year-old, and a 15-year-old.
  • Working ages dominate the list indicating the social and economic impact of the crashes beyond the emotional upheaval.

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi has appealed to motorists for caution, blaming reckless overtaking and speeding. Zimbabwe records more than 2,000 road deaths every year.
