Energy giant Sakunda Holdings has distanced itself from the much-anticipated Battle of Zimbabwe, believed to have been set for Unity Day
“It is political mischief, Unity Day is a national event, Sakunda can never take ownership of that,” Sakunda special projects manager Nqobile Magwizi told Zim Now.
Magwizi also indicated that he was not aware of the match and had no idea who the organisers are.
Some media outlets have reported on a Sakunda Cup match between Highlanders and Dynamos set for Unity Day with the winners slotted to walk away with US$100 000 while the runners-up would pocket US$80 000.
Dynamos and Highlanders were seen in practice up to Monday, but Dynamos did not train on Tuesday and are not expected to be in action today (Wednesday).
Both teams declined to comment when Zim Now asked them about the match.
On Monday, Zifa CEO Xolisani Gwesela said Zifa was not aware of the game.
However, prominent sports administrator Tendai Zhakata said the match is on and he cannot disclose the sponsors of the match.
“The match is on, everything is set but I cannot disclose the sponsors now as we are still finalising some issues,” Zhakata told Zim Now.
