Three people perished in a road traffic accident that happened at the 300km peg along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has announced.
In a statement on its official Twitter handle, the ZRP informed of the tragedy that involved a Toyota Hilux vehicle that knocked over seven pedestrians and went on to collide with a Honda Fit. It happened on Christmas day at around 1945 hours.
"A motorist, who was driving a Toyota Hilux vehicle with three passengers on board towards Vic Falls, lost control of the car and veered off the road to the left. He ran over seven pedestrians before swerving to the right side where he rammed onto a stationary Honda Fit vehicle which had six passengers,"said the police.
Two pedestrians who were hit by the Hilux were reported dead together with one person who was in the Honda Fit, while 13 others were injured. The impact from the Hilux caused the Honda Fit to spin and ended up landing on its roof.
The Commissioner General of the police, Godwin Matanga earlier on December 16 said they were going to conduct road safety campaigns to ensure the reduction of accidents this festive season.
He highlighted that it was a period characterized by an increase in human and traffic movements and as such he urged motorists to be exemplary on the roads and promote road safety at all times to avoid unfortunate incidences.
