Waterfalls Man in Court for Robbery After Impersonating Police Officer

A 42-year-old Waterfalls man has appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing robbery charges after allegedly posing as a police officer and participating in a staged arrest that turned into a daylight robbery.

Takawira Guruza was arraigned over a dramatic incident that occurred on December 2, 2025, in Ruwa.

Prosecutors allege that he and four accomplices — identified only as James Dululu, Ngoni, Shoko and Courage — robbed two victims of US$600. The accomplices are still at large.

According to the State, Guruza and his associates planned to rob Wesley and Pretty Katsatsa. To execute their plan, they approached taxi driver Joakim Kwenda and falsely claimed to be police officers. They hired his Toyota Wish (registration AEW 5097) and instructed him to drive to George Shopping Centre in Ruwa.

Once there, the gang confronted Wesley Katsatsa, claiming he was under arrest for an unspecified offence. They forced him into the taxi and searched a small bag he was carrying, allegedly stealing US$600.

When Pretty Katsatsa demanded the return of the bag, the gang threw it back — now empty.

The suspects then removed the driver from the steering wheel and attempted to flee. In a desperate attempt to stop them, Pretty Katsatsa climbed onto the bonnet of the moving vehicle and screamed for help, attracting the attention of bystanders. Members of the public intervened, stopping the car and leading to Guruza’s arrest, while his accomplices escaped with the stolen cash.

Police said a search conducted on Guruza recovered several fraudulent identity cards, including a fake City of Harare “Traffic Law Enforcement” ID with his photograph but bearing the name “Willard Madanha,” a police ID card, and a national identity document.

The stolen US$600 has not been recovered. Guruza was remanded in custody pending further investigations.
