A 47-year-old man from Burnside, Bulawayo, had four of his right-hand fingers and half his palm amputated after a grenade he had been using as a key holder exploded in his hands.

According to Police, the man was unaware that he was carrying a dangerous object which he had been using for almost two weeks.

ZRP spokesperson for Bulawayo Province, Inspector Abednico Ncube, said the man found the grenade on January 1 while he was working in the garden.

He reportedly showed it to his friend who also did not recognise that it was a grenade.

“In the process of cutting grass he picked up a hand grenade which had a small pipe like metal, with a spring inside and a safety pin. He showed it to his friend before pocketing it in his trousers.

“On January 12 at around 1500 hours, he pulled the safety pin of the hand grenade and it exploded twice in his right hand.

“He was injured on the right-hand palm and was taken to United Bulawayo Hospital where he is currently admitted,” Insp Ncube said.
