Munetsi situation set for talks

Warriors coach Marian Marinică has revealed plans to hold talks with midfielder Marshall Munetsi in a bid to resolve issues that have kept the player out of the Zimbabwe national team setup.

Munetsi, currently playing for Paris FC on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, has missed several recent national team selections, including the latest squad named for the Four Nations Tournament in Botswana.

His continued absence has raised questions among supporters, particularly as the midfielder has maintained strong performances at club level.

Speaking to Soccer24, Marinică emphasised that the door remains open for the experienced midfielder and said he is eager to resolve the matter through direct engagement.

“First of all, Marshall remains a very important player for the national team. As a coach, I will always want the best Zimbabwean players to be available, and Marshall is certainly one of them,” said Marinică.

The situation dates back to late 2025 when Munetsi was unexpectedly omitted from Zimbabwe’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco. The Warriors technical team at the time cited concerns over the player’s fitness following recovery from injury.

Munetsi, one of the senior figures in the squad and a former vice-captain, publicly expressed disappointment, arguing that he had recovered sufficiently to participate in the tournament.

The matter was further complicated by administrative requirements linked to player availability. The Zimbabwe Football Association indicated that required medical clearance and documentation from the player’s club had not been received in time for submission of the final squad.

Since then, Munetsi has not returned to national duty, fuelling speculation of strained relations between the midfielder and the technical team.

Marinică believes open dialogue remains the best path toward restoring unity within the squad.

“In the spirit of clarity and unity, we have requested a meeting with Marshall Munetsi so that we can sit down, speak openly and get to the bottom of any misunderstandings that may be there. These matters are always best handled through direct, respectful and honest communication,” he said.
