Zimbabwe could play a central role in the first-ever Africa T20 Cup, a new continental tournament under consideration by the Africa Cricket Association (ACA). Modeled on the Asia Cup, the competition aims to boost cricket across Africa and generate revenue to support the ACA’s activities.
According to ESPNcricinfo, the ACA, restructured last year with Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) chief Tavengwa Mukuhlani as chair, is currently reviewing financially viable proposals. Organizers hope to launch the tournament by 2027, but exact dates depend on participation from major teams, particularly South Africa.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) expressed interest in principle but must assess its packed schedule before committing a first-choice squad. South Africa resumes international cricket in September 2026 and will continue through February 2027, with the next Future Tours Program (FTP) expected to finalize their calendar for the coming five years. Zimbabwe’s schedule will also be influenced, though they are less affected by the FTP due to not participating in the World Test Championship.
As a precursor, CSA and ZC are in talks to host a tri-nation series with Namibia to inaugurate the Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium at Victoria Falls. Likely in ODI format, the series could act as a curtain-raiser for the Africa T20 Cup, with some proceeds going to the ACA. This initiative is also seen as an opportunity to attract sponsorship and fan interest ahead of the larger tournament.
Zimbabwe’s involvement comes amid growing regional cricket cooperation. South Africa recently toured Zimbabwe for two Tests and a T20 tri-series in June-July 2025, marking their first Test visit in 11 years.
