Trucker fined, banned from driving after fatal Harare–Mutare Road crash

A Chitungwiza truck driver has been fined US$600 and banned from driving for two years after he struck and killed a pedestrian who was standing by the roadside looking for transport along the Harare–Mutare Road.

Terrence Kambanje (38) was convicted of culpable homicide by the Rusape Magistrates’ Court following the fatal road traffic accident.

The court fined Kambanje US$600 and prohibited him from driving for two years. He was also sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, wholly suspended on condition of good behaviour. His driver’s licence was cancelled.

The court heard that on December 1, 2022, at the 169-kilometre peg along the Harare–Mutare Road, Kambanje was driving a white Freightliner truck when he struck a 41-year-old pedestrian who was standing by the roadside seeking transport.

The victim died on the spot.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was polytrauma sustained during the collision.

The court found that the offender failed to exercise due caution after noticing a pedestrian near the roadway, failed to keep a proper lookout, and did not act reasonably to avoid the collision when it became imminent.
