Information and Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services minister Jenfan Muswere was recently and for the first time, invited to attend the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation Ministerial Alliance for Digital Nations 2023 summit in London, the United Kingdom.
Minister Muswere is joined by Zimbabwean Ambassador to the UK Colonel (Retired) Christian Katsande and Netone CEO Raphael Mushanawani.
Muswere said the platform is meant to facilitate collaboration between governments and the ICT industry in addressing ICT issues for economic development.
The invitation is a positive gesture in the country’s pursuit to be readmitted into the Club.
Zimbabwe submitted a readmission application in 2018.
As a condition, the Commonwealth has said that to rejoin, Zimbabwe would need to show compliance with the fundamental values set out in the Commonwealth Charter, including respect for democracy and the protection of human rights.
In November 2022, a delegation led by the C/wealth assistant secretary general, Luis Franceschi, visited the country as part of the informal process of assessment for Zimbabwe’s readmission.
Professor Franceschi said Zimbabwe had made significant progress in its journey to rejoin the Commonwealth family.
