There is need to motivate and upgrade women within the council’s organogram, City of Harare Human Resources and General Purposes Committee Chairperson, Kudzai Kadzombe has said.
Speaking to the council female employees, who are in managerial positions, acting and substantive, from grade 4 to grade 8, Kadzombe said female employees must support and empower each other within business cycles.
“There is need for women professionals to be supported enough for them to rise through to the critical positions in the organisation. This is not a fight against men but it’s just for women to empower each other such that they can fill all those positions.
“There is need to uplift women to managerial positions and those women should mentor other young women to go into the right path for them to succeed,” said Kadzombe.
Kadzombe also said that job recruitment, evaluation and promotion policies should be fairly positioned to all employees regardless of gender.
“If a woman has the capacity to perform the duty, she has to be given the job. Recently, the City of Harare launched the School of Excellence where 28 women graduated and the programme gave opportunities to women to upgrade their professional skills,” she said.
In response, female employees from the council called on the City to come up with policies which encourage and support female employees in the organisation.
The discussions were being held against the background of women’s month celebrations which are celebrated in March every year.
Women’s Month Celebration has since served as a venue to highlight women’s achievements and discuss continuing and emerging women’s empowerment and gender equality issues and concerns, challenges, and commitments.
