The Zimbabwe Power Company, Zesa Holdings’ generation subsidiary, has upped power production from a paltry under 80 MWh last week to a total of total of 727MW.
Of the 727 total, Hwange contributed 395MW while Kariba injected 332MW.
On Thursday last week, power generation at Hwange – the country’s largest thermal power producer with an installed capacity of 920MW - was subdued with only 73MW being fed to the national grid, owing to equipment breakdown at the old units.
Last Wednesday in the National Assembly, Energy and Power Development Minister, Soda Zhemu, said Hwange Thermal Power Station Unit 7 is expected to be switched on by March 16, 2023 with Unit 8 a month later, developments that will greatly ease Zimbabwe’s power supply deficit.
Both units will inject an additional 600 megawatts, which are expected to boost Zimbabwe’s energy production and ease imports.
