Michael Mashiri

A man, who attacked a fellow imbiber with a knobkerrie on the head, forehead and face, accusing him of stealing his phone, has been taken to court.

Wellington Machezera, 49, of Kuwadzana 3, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts facing attempted murder charges.

The State alleges that on December 24, 2023, at around 2000 hours, at Biso Biso Bottle Store, corner Angwa Street and Kwame Nkrumah, Harare, the complainant was drinking beer with his friends, including Machezera whom he left at the bottle store.

The complainant got drunk and failed to go to his house and went to Harare Gardens where he met his other friends and they continued drinking beer up to early hours of Christmas Day.

While drinking beer in Harare Gardens, Machezera came and confronted the complainant, accusing him of stealing his cellphone earlier on.

When complainant was about to reply to Machezera while seated, he was hit with a knobkerrie on the head, forehead, face, and all over the body.

Machezera had to be refrained by complainant’s friend, one Daniel Mutandavari, as he had collapsed and bleeding on the face.

One of the complainant’s friends called an ambulance which later ferried him to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he was admitted.

The complainant sustained a cut on forehead and upper lip. He also had scratches on the right hand wrist, right leg shin and painful right leg.

Complainant is still admitted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

Machezera was ordered to appear in court on January 16.
