The government has since moved to regularise and provide legal ownership  to informal settlement by offering over 1.5 million tittle deeds through the Presidential Tittle Deeds Programme.

This comes as President Emmerson Mnangagwa put a halt to the demolition of illegal structures on state and council land to which he has facilitated the move to recognise the occupation of land and provide ownership to those that meet the criteria of the programme.

In a statement, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities, Engineer Theodius Chinyanga confirmed that the government is against the demolition of people’s homes and has taken task to provide necessary documents to meet requirements for occupation and ownership of land.

“Instead, the government is focused on regularising informal settlements, aiming to provide tittle deeds to over 1.5 million homeowners through the Kwangu/ Ngakwami Presidential Tittle Deeds Programme.

“The government is streamlining the program to facilitate access to credit finance and infrastructure investment, enhancing the overall well-being of communities,” Chinyanga said.

The ministry also seeks to provide access to essential services to homeowners through the initiative that legalises their occupation and transverse into a machinery that counters corruption in the allocation and sale of land.
