Mhako tears into Tinashe Mutarisi over Zim dancehall

Bridget Mabanda

Arts activist Plot Mhako has accused Nash TV’s Tinashe Mutarisi of stifling Zim dancehall through his apparent promotion of the artistes.

“Why murikuda kuramba muchida kubhabhadzira ma artists muchivasimbisa zvakafa? Fact is genre needs to put in more work and do better. I am not playing Messiah here. These artists have dreams and desires to be better and take their dreams global, ask them...,” wrote Plot Mhako on Facebook.

“Their mindset needs to change, their attitude towards their art and craft needs to shift and they need to do better,” he said.

This was in apparent response to Mutarisi’s Facebook post earlier this week in which he said local musicians are doing well and what they have through music is good.

Mutarisi owns Colour Vibes online telecast, which broadcasts as Nash TV.

Mhako said Mutarisi only looking out for his own brand at the expense of desperate artists. Mhako also said a lot needs to be changed for the arts to become viable businesses.

Mhako alleged that Nash TV contracts take all the music rights from artists performing on their platform while only giving the artists publicity in return.

Nash TV offered an option for musicians to perform during the Covid-19 lockdown periods.

Mhako said Nash Paints business is expanding to other countries but Mutarisi wants local musicians to remain local while he is pushing his business abroad.

Mutarisi’s personal assistant said she is not in a position to give a comment concerning the issue as it is the weekend.

Recently, Nash TV released ‘Gospel Vibes’, an album featuring upcoming and prominent Zimbabwean gospel artistes.

The album compilation comprises twenty tracks with top acts including Mambo Dhuterere, Dorcas Moyo and Vabati VaJehova.
