In a sign that the Nyau dance will not die any time soon, Katanga Beerhall in St Mary’s, Chitungwiza is hosting a clash between Zambezi Nyau Club and Shamva-based Mingchung on Sunday afternoon.
Katanga Beerhall has of late become popular with the nyau dance with outfits from several towns visiting.
The Dinnas Kamushinda-fronted Zambezi Nyau Club, which has a number of adept dancers, has also visited other clubs.
In an interview with Zim Now ahead of the clash, Zambezi Nyau Club leader, Kamushinda said nyau dance is here to stay.
“This is not the first time we are dating Mingchung. We were there recently and it was an interesting clash.
“Nyau dance is actually on the rise and we are trying to push it even further. We expect that very soon it would have grown even bigger, beyond people’s expectations.
“We are appealing to our fans to support us so that the dance continues to grow. When we charge US$1, we are only saying support us. We are appealing to those who have the means to support us with transport, meals and refreshments, especially for our visitors. This will only make nyau dance bigger and better.
“On our part as Zambezi Nyau Club, we will not relent, we will continue to bring in more and more competitive sides to keep you entertained,” said Kamushinda.
Kamushinda, who is also an adept mbira player added that Zambezi Nyau Club, who marked their seventh anniversary last year, can compete with any group.
“We expect to win the contest again because we pride ourselves with our team which is buoyed by the exploits of Boss Kedha, Destroyer, Officer, Yeke Yeke, MaDeMbare and Sauro.”
In a previous interview with this [publication, Kamushinda said that the nyau dance culture is secretive and fans are not supposed to know who is who among the dancers.
“Ours group is called Zambezi Nyau Club and our brand of dance is called the Zimbabwean-Zambian Nyau dance.
