Mighty Warriors goalkeeper, Cynthia Shonga has officially signed with Richmond United Ladies in South Africa’s Hollywoodbets Super League.

Her move to the South African comes as Shonga was contemplating retiring from the game due to some financial issues.

Shonga’s signing marks a new chapter in her career as she joins one of South Africa’s top women’s soccer teams, signalling a promising future for the talented goalkeeper.

Cynthia Shonga was named Richmond United Ladies’ first-choice goalkeeper for the side’s weekend fixture.

This is a significant milestone for the Zimbabwean, who has worked tirelessly to establish herself as one of the top goalkeepers in the region.

Her selection is testament to her exceptional goalkeeping skills and her appointment as first-choice goalkeeper is a well-deserved recognition of her ability and potential.

The former Harare City player Shonga made her Cosafa-20 Women debut under the mentorship of former Mighty Warriors coach, Rosemary Mugadza. She played a crucial role in the development of Women football in the country.

Commenting on the move, Mugadza said it was good for Zimbabwean players to play in other countries, arguing it was beneficial for the development of our football.

“It’s a good move for our players to go and play in other countries, it’s a plus in terms of our development and marketing to our players within the region and the world over.

“I am happy that Cynthia has signed for Richmond United Ladies, which is a starting point and stepping stone for her to advance her career. I’m wishing her all the best. I have said to her it’s all about discipline, commitment and dedication for her to excel as a player.

“She has to adapt as quickly as possible to the play in South Africa, which might be different from the local game. I hope she will do well at Richard Bay and maybe progress to somewhere else that can open other avenues and other opportunities for her to reach where she wanted to go and play in Europe,” said Mugadza.

Last year, Shonga won the Golden Glove and prize money of R20 000 at the Cosafa Women’s Cup played in South Africa.

Shonga previously played for Faith Drive Academy, Herentals Queens and Harare City Queens.
