Action Chakauya, 35, a security guard stationed at premises opposite Mbare Musika Retail Market, has appeared in court facing charges of negligently causing a fire that led to massive destruction at the well-known Harare marketplace.

The incident, which took place on October 8, 2024, resulted in significant damage, with property losses estimated at US$5 million.

According to reports, Chakauya, who was on duty at the time, started a fire near the main entrance of the market to keep himself warm.

Unfortunately, the fire quickly spread out of control, engulfing the Mbare Musika Retail Market, one of the busiest and most vital trading hubs in the city.

The Mbare Musika Retailers, the complainants in the case, reported the extensive damage to their property.

Following a police investigation into the cause of the blaze, Chakauya was arrested.

The case was brought before the Mbare Magistrates' Court, where the matter has been postponed to October 21, 2024, for a bail ruling.
