Independence Torch Relay Begins Ahead of 44th Celebrations

Government has officially launched its 44th Independence Day commemorations with the symbolic lighting of the Independence Torch in Harare, marking the start of a nationwide relay ahead of April 18.

The ceremony took place at the Museum of Human Sciences — formerly Queen Victoria Museum — situated along Rotten Row Road near Rainbow Towers Hotel. The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage confirmed the event as the curtain-raiser for a series of national celebrations.

The torch is now set to travel across the country, symbolizing unity and remembrance. On Thursday, it will arrive in Kwekwe, where it will be handed over to the Midlands provincial leadership at a ceremony held at Mutapa Hall. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is expected to officiate at the event.

On April 17, the flame will be relit at the historic Sikombela Detention Camp, a site that holds deep significance in Zimbabwe’s liberation history. Vice President Kembo Mohadi will preside over this leg of the relay, which will then proceed to Mutora in Nembudziya, led by the Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture alongside selected torch bearers.

The Independence Flame remains a powerful national emblem of Zimbabwe’s hard-won freedom, resilience, and unity.

This year’s Independence celebrations are themed around resilience, nation-building, and cultural pride, with events scheduled in all provinces to reflect on the country’s journey, honour its heroes, and envision a future of peace and development.
