A 35-year-old man from Karoi, Freddy Zviito, appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Courts facing fraud charges after allegedly swindling ZWG$370,000 from a client through a laptop purchase scam conducted via WhatsApp.

Zviito, who admitted to the charge, is set to have his plea officially recorded on April 28.

The complainant, Adolf Shumbanhete ,35, reportedly contacted Rosemary Chinhema on March 28 to seek assistance in purchasing laptops. Chinhema referred him to Zviito, who falsely claimed he could facilitate the purchase.

Believing him, Shumbanhete transferred ZWG$380,000 to a CBZ bank account linked to Zviito, despite never having met him in person. Zviito allegedly withdrew the funds, amounting to US$10,500, after presenting an affidavit confirming receipt.

However, when Shumbanhete later followed up on the delivery of the laptops, he found himself blocked on all communication platforms by Zviito. Realizing he had been defrauded, Shumbanhete reported the matter to authorities, leading to Zviito’s arrest.

The total value lost in the scam was ZWG$370,000.
