The Construction of the US$1 billion investment project that is estimated to give an annual turnover of US$1.5 billion is 40 percent complete.
The carbon steel plant in Manhize, Chivhu, which is being constructed by Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Disco) is one of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s investment programmes under his Zimbabwe is open for business mantra.
Equipped with a 1.5km-by-600-metre carbon and steel plant, an iron ore mine, and a ferrochrome plant, the project will have the capacity of 1.2 million tonnes a year and about 500 people are set to benefit through employment.
Speaking to journalists in a post-Cabinet media briefing, Acting Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere also gave updates on other mining projects at Hwange, Mimosa and Sabi Star mines.
He said the construction of Athe Phase 2 coke oven battery at Dinson Colliery in Hwange, Matabeleland North Province, has reached 70 percent completion.
“The upgrading of number 1 and rebuilding of the number 2 furnaces at Zimasco High Carbon Ferrochrome Smelter in Kwekwe in the Midlands Province has reached 80 percent and 20 percent of completion, respectively, while the number 7 and 8 furnaces have reached 50 percent.”
He said major civil works on the concentrator optimisation at Mimosa Mining Company in Zvishavane, Midlands Province, had been completed.
In addition, construction of the lithium processing plant at Sabi Star Mine in Buhera, Manicaland Province, is 50 percent complete.
